Composition

  • Ground clay
  • Fine-grained quartz sand
  • Kaolinite
  • Starch

Clay paint is a traditional natural interior paint that combines the moisture-balancing properties of clay with a decorative finish. Its mineral composition creates a breathable, antistatic, and pleasantly matte surface. When applied with a brush, the paint produces a lively, cloud-like appearance that cannot be achieved with conventional industrial paints.

Ingredients and properties

  • Based on natural clays and kaolinite
  • Contains fine-grained quartz sand
  • Does not contain preservatives
  • Odorless
  • Diffuse and breathable
  • Antistatic surface
  • Suitable for people with allergies
  • Matte and slightly textured finish
  • Can be tinted with pigments up to 10%
  • Quartz gives the surface a light sparkle

Layers and consumption

  • Usually 2 layers
  • Average consumption: approx. 300 g/mยฒ for two layers
  • Exact consumption depends on substrate absorption and structure.

Substrate

  • Clean, dry and strong
  • Evenly absorbing and oil-free
  • Suitable for mineral plasters, concrete and primed gypsum boards
  • Not suitable for wood, plastic, distempers and oil or dispersion paints
  • Not suitable for glossy or non-absorbent surfaces

Tools

  • Large soft brush

1. Preparation of the Substrate

Surface must be clean, dry, stable and uniformly absorbent. Remove dust, oils, loose layers and other absorption reducing substances. If necessary, repair damages and prime the surface.

2. Paint preparation

Mix 1 kg of clay paint powder into about 1,5โ€“1,7 litres of water. Mix into a uniform mass, let stand for at least 30 minutes and then mix again. When tinting, first mix the pigments into a paste with hot water and then add to the mixed paint.

3. Application

Apply to the surface using a large soft brush. Full coverage is usually achieved with two layers. The wet paint is more transluscent and will turn more opaque as it dries. Tinted paints will dry several shades lighter than they appear when wet.

4. Decorative techniques

  • Soft cloudy result: use semi-circular brush strokes.
  • Stronger cloudy effect: use crisscrossing X-shaped strokes.
  • Avoid painting in straight vertical panes in order to not get visible borders between panes.
  • To accentuate the sparkling effect of the quartz sand, brush over the dried surface with a slightly damp brush.

5. Drying and conditions

  • Working temperature min. +8 ยฐC
  • Drying time between layers at least 8 hours
  • Unprimed plaster surfaces can be lightly moistened before painting.

6. Maintenance and Recommendations

The fully mixed paint will store in a cool place for 2โ€“3 days. Before painting a large surface, it is recommended to try a sample surface first to evaluate the effect of the tone and brush pattern on the final result.

HA:IM recommendation:
Clay paint is perfect for spaces where you want to achieve a natural and lively wall surface. With various brush techniques, gentle cloud effects as well as more boldly textured decorative surfaces can be created.
